 AME - Objectives:

1. Give people who do not have Spanish Language skills an opportunity to experience the Los Toros Mission.

2. Build solidarity between the people of St. Joseph - Grafton and the people of Los Toros.

3. Participate in another culture that is in the Third World.

4. Reflect on your role of implementing the gospel of Jesus Christ.

5. Support our mission by working with the people of Los Toros on one of the Mission Projects.

Commitment:

To prepare for this experience it will be required to attend approximately three preparation sessions that will include; a Mission Trip Orientation, our commitment to Charity and Justice, our philosophy and goals for the Los Toros Mission and the Dominican Culture and way of life.

Living conditions in Los Toros are not primitive, however they do reflect life in the Third World and not all conveniences are available. The experience will involve frequent black-outs of electricity, though for some visitors there will be running water and bathrooms. for some others there are no facilities in homes, also there will not be hot water in any of the homes and meals will be the traditional fare of Los Toros. Your acceptance of these conditions will be an outward sign of your solidarity with the people who live in the village year round.

The experience will offer time to connect with Scripture and reflect on your role as a follower of Jesus Christ. You will also be requested to interact with the people in the village by attending some of their meetings and assisting at their worship services.

There will also be an opportunity to experience some of the culture and history of the capital city of Santo Domingo with its historic colonial section and visit some of its monuments.

As a sign of solidarity we will attempt to keep costs at a minimum and use reliable accommodations but not extravagant facilities. Prepaid costs will include transportation, hotels, some meals outside of Los Toros and a stipend for food that your hosts in Los Toros will serve you. Generally our costs run about $500.00 for airfare and about $250.00 - $350.00 for travel and accommodations in the Dominican Republic.

Guides and interpreters will be available, however there will be periods when participants will be on their own.

Visit our travel page for more information.

Registration - Reservation:

The trip will be limited to fifteen persons plus staff. You may Pre-Register using the form below:

Health Concerns:

Currently there are no serious health concerns in the Dominican Republic, however we always need to take precautions; if you go to Los Toros you do not need to take Malaria Prevention Drugs! We will advise you if you do!

Some older adults may not have received both Hepatitis "A" and Hepatitis "B" inoculations. We recommend that you get these shots. Ozaukee county residents can get these shots at a reasonable cost at: http://www.co.ozaukee.wi.us/PublicHealth/index.html

These are a serious of shots that take months so if you did not receive them - start now.
