October 2010 Adult Mission Experience

Haiti  Project

Current Circumstances:

Haiti is the poorest nation of the Americas and has been so for a long time; the terrible earthquake of January 2010 has devastated Haiti even more and forced some of its citizens to seek resources in the Dominican Republic. By the way, did you know the unemployment rate in Haiti is 70%, about 50% of the people cannot read or write, 12% of children die before their first birthday, 30% of children die before their fifth birthday!

The Haitian Population in Los Toros has grown to over 100 people and there are approximately eighteen houses of Haitians in the village with more residing in makeshift shelters in the fields. They need food, better shelter, water, clothes, medical aid and education.

Strategy:

By helping the Haitians in Los Toros we will free up the some of the resources they gain from their farm jobs to send back to their families in Haiti. Helping them to get better food and living conditions will help the Dominicans in Los Toros by preventing outbreaks of disease and deterioration of living conditions.

Objective:

Give help to Haitians living in Los Toros in the short term with food, clothing, water and personal care and hygiene supplies. Give help to the Haitians in the long term by helping with education opportunities, vocational training and advocating for better health care.

Plan of Action:

We already have done some pre-planning and establish some communication with the Haitians. They want to work with us and collaborate. The Los Toros SVDP group will work with us to help the Haitians.

The Haitians have prepared a census of houses in Los Toros and have given us a list of materials that they need.

We can start gathering materials immediately and pack them into suitcases to be distributed during our Mission Experience in Los Toros.

Guidelines:

Important: Because of Baggage limitations we cannot take items that are not a priority for the Haitians; we also do not want to use our space taking clothes or items that are worn, moldy or not “New” or “Like New”!

All Personal Care and Hygiene materials must be “New”!

All clothing must be either “New” or “Like New”!

Clothing must be lightweight and suitable for a Hot Climate.

Bedding materials must be “New” or “Like New”.

Of the Haitian population in Los Toros approximately 75% are male and 25% are female with only a few children.
