The Place – Los Toros,
Azua, Dominican Republic.
It was the end of summer (but summer never ends in Los Toros) and the hot
season; farmers were planting tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, cucumbers,
tobacco and more. There has been some rain so the mountains were green and
beautiful; while we were there the skies were clear and a brilliant blue.
Farmers were riding their horses, donkeys and motor bikes to the fields to
complete their planting. There are few trucks in Los Toros, many farmers
walk to their fields early in the morning and return late in the
afternoon; women carry their noon meal out to the fields. On Sunday we
went to the neighboring village of Sajanoa and saw about twenty men riding
their horses through the village as part of a political rally; during the
week these same horses are used in the fields.
Era
