Jacky with Mark Bennett

(Jacques Pierre Louis (Jacky) is twenty-four years old was born and raised in Haiti and now lives legally in Los Toros, Dominican Republic. Conditions in Haiti have been and continue to be very bad and Jacky is trying to get an education in order to help his family in Haiti and also his native country. He would like to become a doctor, )

however he does not have the time nor resources to achieve that at this time, right now his second choice is to study languages, he already speaks four, and teach them either to young people in Haiti or to Haitians who have immigrated into the Dominican Republic.

Jacky is a bright young man, he did well in high school, has acquired all the legal documents necessary to study in the Dominican Republic. His mother is deceased and his father lives with his brothers and sisters in a small village not too far from the Dominican Boarder. Jacky has been helping us help the Haitians who live in Los Toros; there are a number of them who work as day laborers on the farms. He has helped to unite the Haitian community in Los Toros and is promoting their education and development. Since he speaks Creole he often acts as interpreter for the Haitians and helps them to get some of the aid that they badly need. This is good both for the Haitians and also for the Dominicans in Los Toros as it creates a better community and improves living conditions for all.

There are not a lot of opportunities for higher education right now in Haiti so Jacky’s best bet is the Dominican Republic. We have gathered some pledges for help, enough to get him started in a weekend intensive modern languages course at UTESA, a university in Santo Domingo. Jacky will work on weekdays and then travel to the university on Saturdays to study. Hopefully he will find enough farm work to support his day to day living and our special Haitian Aid – Beca (Scholarship) will get him to the university.

We are collaborating with the people of Los Toros to help the Haitians and this is part of that effort. We are seeking pledges for monthly support of his education; a pledge of $10.00 per month by twenty people will cover his education expenses, thus far we have about ten pledges so we are halfway there. We also will gladly accept one time contributions to help Jacky. Pledges and Contributions can be sent to St. Joseph Church, 1619 Washington Street, Grafton WI 53024 or to Los Toros Foundation Inc., 209 West Cedar St, Grafton, WI 53024. A Pledge/Contribution Form is available  here
