2011 Mission Trip
January
5, 2011 to Jan 26, 2011

This
is the "camiónetta" we probably will ride from Azua to Los
Toros!
Our January
Mission Trip has some special Goals and Objectives; these were chiefly
determined by the people in Los Toros.
The leaders in
Los Toros presented us with a petition signed by twenty-five young
people in Sajanoa to come there and teach them English and help them to
develop their community. We will send people from our January Mission
Team on a daily basis to work with the people in Sajanoa and help them
in their community. We also hope to raise some funds to repair their
church and talk to them about their dream of building a library in their
community! It would be nice if we could take funds with us to help the
community of Sajanoa.
We will have a
medical team working with the Pre-Natal group in Los Toros. Our goal is
to assure that all women get sufficient pre-natal treatment and post
natal follow-up; some nurses from Los Toros and other volunteers have
been working with us for about one year. During the past year no women
have died during or after their delivery, in the previous year at least
two women died. We will be taking some medical and baby supplies with
us.
All Beca -
scholarship students will be meeting with some of us for an annual
assessment and to renew their Beca Contracts. Each student signs a
contract that indicates his/her benefits and his/her obligations.
Currently we have sixteen students attending universities, they all
understand that there is a long waiting list for a Beca and part of
their responsibility is to carefully use the resources that are given to
us and try to get the greatest benefit from those resources, not only
for their selves but also for their community. We hope to take some
Laptops for students and also to use in the LTMC.
Water filters
and cement floors are very important especially with the outbreak of
Cholera in Haiti which is only hours away from Los Toros. The Water
Committee will be meeting with us to continue our program of Water
Filters and education on using water safely. During our May and October
missions some of us only drank water from the filters as a test of their
effectiveness, not one person got sick! This was also a demonstration of
our solidarity with the Dominicans who use the filters every day. We
will be taking donations for more water filters with us.
The LTMC - Los
Toros Mission Center is taking shape and we will work to make it an
effective meeting place and station for our programs. It also has guest
quarters and we are working to furnish the center with proper equipment
to accomplish our work. While we are there we invite people from the
village to stay with us and come and eat with us because it is also
their center and they have a right to use it. We will be taking
equipment for the center with us.
We also will be
working with the Los Toros SVDP, visiting the poor and the sick and especially
working with refugees from the earthquake in Haiti. We will be taking
clothing and shoes, soap, shampoo and other items with us.
Traveling will
be a bit of a challenge, January Team members could not get the same
flights; we hope to meet in Miami and go together to Santo Domingo. The
next day we will have to hail a bus to Azua in Santo Domingo and load up
seven or eight people and about eighteen suitcases to just get to Azua.
In Azua we hope to find a "camiónetta"
- pickup truck - to
haul us and our bags to Los Toros - this is traveling Dominican style;
they do it all the time. Our people know the rules; women get the inside
seats, outside passengers must sit down and no limbs hanging over the
side or back! Don’t worry about us - we know how to travel safely!
