The Universidad Autónoma
de Santo Domingo (UASD) (Autonomous University of Santo Domingo) is
the public
university system in the Dominican
Republic with its main campus in Santo
Domingo and regional centers across the Republic. It was reopened
and renamed in 1914, replacing the former Universidad
Santo Tomás de Aquino, the first university of the Western
Hemisphere (Americas), which was founded unofficially by a Papal bull in
1538, officially by royal decree in 1558. In
the year 2010 an extension of UASD was opened in the city of San Juan de
Maguana, a city that is about one hour west of Los Toros. Currently
there are limited courses at this university, however, it offers an opportunity
for advanced education to people living in rural areas and many are
seizing this opportunity. There are about forty young adults from Los
Toros now attending this university, they have organized and assist one
another in their efforts at learning. We currently support these
students with a weekly allocation of RD $2,000.00 (US $52.00) for
transportation and will take two laptops and a printer to Los Toros in
January 2012 for them to use. Some of the students are pictured in the
photo above.
