The
Story of Hogares and the October AME .........
The word for "Homes" in Spanish is "Hogares". Our
Hogares Program now has "three" goals: to help the extremely
poor to get a decent home, to help people with dirt floors to get a
"cement" floor and to help people who have some resources to get
a loan to complete their home. All three of these goals require collaboration
and cooperation with the individual and the community. Though collaboration
and cooperation we are able to not only meet these goals but also reach
some other goals such as creating a more dynamic society and improving
life within the community as a whole.

Netalis De Leon stands in the doorway of his family's
new home, hopefully they will have many happy years in their new home!

Netalis with his mother and grandmother at their new
house - three generations, each one a little taller!

Bladimir
Mendez lives here with his father Andres. The roof has just about had it!

Soon
they will be moving into this new house!
New homes are built with funds from the Los Toros
Mission and Los Toros Foundation with additional help from the Los Toros
Community. Owners must volunteer to work on the new house and members of the
community also help a professional construction crew.

This is one of the worst houses in Los
Toros.
Five people sleep in this
bed!

Houses with straw (palm leaves) roofs are dangerous, one
spark from a fire or an electrical spark can start them on fire!

In
fact, the house behind this boy burned down two weeks after this photo was
taken
There are many factors that enter into housing
problems in the Third World; it is not just poverty. Families that do not have
access to education cannot develop their resources to create adequate housing,
disease, both physical and metal can affect families. Some resources, such as
lumber are very difficult to obtain and other resources, such as cement can be
very costly.
It takes a village to raise a child and it also takes
a village to build a house!
